are needed each month to turn the economy around. so that is the big number we have. that's where we start. good morning. i'm bill hemmer. welcome here. morning, martha. martha: good morning bill. what a week. it is friday. welcome everybody, i'm martha maccallum. this jobs report today could be the freshest things people have in their mind in terms of a economic number when they head to the polls in a few days. this short shows it has been a very slow, sluggish recovery. the government reports real unemployment, this is the number we want to focus on, 14.6%. we say that for a good reason. that includes people that are underemployed, even people only worked one day, get counted in the underemployed, part time emed employed. some just have given up. bill: stuart varney, anchor fox business network. good morning to you. start with the more significant number you find there. what is that, stuart? >> that is the real unemployment rate. that gives the true picture of the employment situation in america today. the that real unemployment rate is 14.6%. that is a dismal picture of the employment p
of that on top of already tough, tough economy. major department stores can derive 10% of sales from manhattan locations. a very big impact expected on the economy. the labor department releasing the final weekly jobs report before the presidential election. it shows 358,000 americans filing for first time jobless benefits. that is drop of just 9000. take a look back so you can keep it into perspective there is look since the start of the recession. we have little change since january when weekly jobless claims dropped to 360,000. tomorrow we get the last big monthly jobs report as the october number comes in. let's bring in fox business network stuart varney for a look at this. good mornings, stuart. what lies ahead? >> that is a difficult question to answer. looking at the numbers we received today from a couple of reports you can probably say tomorrow 8:30 eastern time there were roughly, 120,000 new jobs created last month. that is a very rough estimate looking at today's numbers. now let me go into today's numbers, they are politically loaded because they present a snapshot of the economy
. some of these obama supporters last time have looked at the economy, looked at what's happened, looked at the last four years and said they want to do something different the next four years. bill: we're in hamilton county, traditionally reliable republican part of the state. it wasn't that way in 2008. is this part of the state where you need to overperform to win? or is it somewhere else in ohio? >> no, southwest ohio is area you need to do well as a republican. again i've been in a lot of victory centers this part of ohio where i'm from, where you're from, enthusiasm is unbelievable. we're having people show up make phone calls who have never been in politics before. we made three times more phone calls than 2008. we knocked on 20 win times more doors than 2008. i see enthusiasm here. i think we'll get turnout in southwest ohio to be good for us. frankly the other side is having tough time getting turnout they had in 2008. bill: senator, thank you for your time. >> you bet. thank you, bill. bill: rob portman here in cincinnati. right after this interview, martha, he jumped in his ca
